The magician displays a beautiful black lacquer oriental looking cabinet that is approximately ten inches wide, seven inches tall, and four inches deep. The front and back doors are opened, and the cabinet is shown to be completely empty. A red rubber ball that is approximately two inches in diameter is placed into the cabinet. Also an empty cocktail glass is placed into the cabinet next to the ball. The doors of the cabinet are closed momentarily. Then when the doors are opened, the ball is now inside the glass! 
 
Except for the opening and closing of the doors, the cabinet itself has not moved from the tabletop. This is a very eerie and mysterious effect that borders on the spooky side of magic. There are no false compartments, mechanisms, electronics, motors, or the like. In fact, the box, glass, and cabinet can be completely examined after the effect’s performance. 
 
It was Jim Simon of Worth Magic, before his company became Milson-Worth, who created the Astro-Ball Cabinet about 1965. The illusion was based on the first phase of Steward James’ Sefalaljia, which appeared in issue 69 of THE JINX magazine, December 2, 1939. It is estimated that this cabinet was probably made about 1979 through the Milson-Worth company. 
 
This is a vintage piece of magic that is in near perfect condition. Do note however that while the trick comes with all the original components including the glass, the red rubber ball has hardened through age and needs replacing (the yellow ball is used in the photo only for explanation of ball size and does not come with the trick). However red rubber balls are inexpensive and easy to find. This item is iconic and a definite collector’s piece of vintage magic.
